Located 90 miles south of Tulsa and 120 miles southeast of Oklahoma City, McAlester is one of the state's oldest communities. Abundant coal deposits discovered in the late 1800s brought an influx of immigrants, particularly Italians, to work the deep mines. As a result, nearby Krebs is known today as Oklahoma's Little Italy and is famous for its great cuisine.

The state penitentiary is located in McAlester, and hosts the annual State Prison Rodeo every Labor Day weekend where inmates and professional cowboys compete in events. Some unusual attractions in the area worth a stop include the Oklahoma Prison Historical Museum, Tannebill Museum (open by appointment only) and the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple.
